The main characteristics of the ROGER corpus ("ROGER" as in: "Corpus of ROmanian academic GEnRes") are:
bilingual (Romanian-English)
written
comparable
academic genres
dynamic
learner / student / novice L1 (mother-tongue Romanian) academic writing
learner / student / novice L2 (English as a Foreign Language) academic writing
The corpus was compiled in the framework of the research project ROGER, financed through a PROMYS grant awarded to the project coordinator, Dr. Madalina Chitez, by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project has been conducted at the West University of Timisoara, at CODHUS (Centre for Corpus Related Digital Approaches to Humanities).
The aim of the project is to develop a corpus-based methodology for the analysis of academic genres, from a contrastive perspective: genres written in L1 (e.g. Romanian L1) versus genres written in English L2. This will contribute to the understanding of what and how students write at the university level, in both English as a Foreign Language and their mother tongue (e.g. Romanian).
